Emerging Tech

SectionUpdated

Industrial data, machine learning on the shop floor and what additive manufacturing actually looks like after the hype cycle. This section is about equipment that has to earn its keep in a building where the roof leaks and the night shift is short-staffed, which is a different subject from the one discussed at launch events. We are interested in what changed on the floor.

The method is dull and deliberate. We read standards drafts while they are still drafts, procurement notices from public buyers who have to publish what they paid for, and the plant-level reporting that manufacturers file because somebody makes them. Vendor material is read too, but as a claim to be checked rather than as a finding. When a claim has no public document behind it, we say so in the piece instead of leaving the reader to guess.

What you will not find here is a verdict on which supplier to buy from. We have no commercial relationship with the companies in this section and we do not run comparison tables that quietly rank whoever pays. Where a technology is genuinely unproven, the honest answer is that it is unproven, and that answer gets published.
